Question: Birthday reading on influences and events coming over the following year, especially my work at the crisis center.

Spread: For each of the 12 astrological houses, two cards are placed, representing a primary and secondary influence in that house this year. There are also two cards in the center, representing the overall focus of the year.

READING

Overall Influences: Five of Pentacles reversed, Eight of Cups reversed.  In the rest of the chart, I do not see any major financial or health problems, and the Five of Pentacles can represent a place where those in spiritual or material need can find help, so in this case, the reversed Five represents turmoil and problems at the crisis center. This is likely to be one of your major focuses in the upcoming year.   The Eight of cups represents a change in your spiritual values, and starting a new journey into your subconscious. The reversal shows that, while this is a strong impulse you will feel many times over the course of the coming year, a variety of events are likely to delay this process for a while.  You are emotionally disinvesting in some of the pursuits that have occupied your attention for the last 7 years or so, but will need to keep at it for a little while longer. Your numerological value for this year is 8, and this, along with the Eight of Cups, represents that you are coming to near the end of a 9-year cycle.  You are starting to feel an impulse toward making major changes in your life, and getting an idea what those may be, but you are still feel a responsibility for and are occupied with the things you are currently doing and trying to bring them to some kind of closure. This will be going on for a couple more years, and then you will be free to follow a new path.

First House (External/Self): Queen of Swords, The Fool. Outwardly, you will need to be very organized and disciplined this year to handle all of the events and competing activities that will demand your attention.  You may not get much help with a lot of these, and will have to deal with them yourself. You will need to analyze each situation clearly, and make decisions based on facts rather than emotions.  This may not endear you to everyone around you, but it will get done what needs to be done.  Those who are closer to you will start to see some changes in your personality this year – an interest in starting new things, and a change in attitude toward some of your responsibilities that was not there before. This does not mean you are taking them any less seriously, just that you are starting to think more about the big picture and cycles of life, and you have a better perspective on the importance of these responsibilities in the grander scheme of things. You are becoming more open to change.

Second House (Material Resources): Two of Swords, Justice.   Here is one aspect of your life in which the Queen of Swords will come into play. You will be balancing competing interests in the use of financial resources this year, and will be making difficult decisions about allocation of these resources toward various goals your family has. You may be weighing short-term expenditures vs. long-term financial needs and retirement planning. A careful distribution of resources among these areas is called for, as there is just enough for everything without a lot left over.  Playing the role of Justice along with the Queen, it will be important to be very fair in making these decisions, taking into account the needs of each of the three members of your family and making sure that they understand the reasoning behind these decisions.

Third House (Conscious Mind, Communication): Hierophant reversed, The Moon. You will continue actively working on integrating your subconscious mind with your conscious mind, through exploration and study of the tarot and other related disciplines. Your thoughts and emotions are somewhat intermingled, and your subconscious mind often affects what you say and do.  You are interested in communicating with others that are studying tarot, and in searching for a teacher or a system of thought that will help with this process. The Hierophant is associated with Sagittarius, and seeking for a system of beliefs and values. Your quest to understand this area of your life brings you intellectual fulfillment, although the reversal of the Hierophant may indicate that a teacher or approach you thought would be helpful turns out not to have the answers you seek, and that you may be better off searching for answers in your own particular way (through the Moon).  You may find that your interest in this area is actively on your mind quite a lot, even when you should be giving attention to other things!

Fourth House (Home, Emotional Foundation): Queen of Cups, Five of Wands, reversed.  The Queen of Cups represents you in your role as nurturer of your family. You will be the emotional center of your home and family in the coming year. You feel centered and loving toward your husband and daughter, and this is a strong foundation for your ability (and theirs) to succeed in other areas of your life.  However, there will continue to be conflicts among your other relatives. They are competing amongst themselves and there will be argument and discord.  As you are viewed as a sympathetic and empathic person in the family, you may be pressured to take sides in this dispute, or simply to understand everyone's point of view. If you choose to take on this role, you could serve as a peacemaker, since you are not taking part in these issues. However, it is likely to be an emotionally draining process and you have quite a number of other things going on this year.

Fifth House (Creativity, Activities and Pleasures): The Lovers reversed, Princess of Wands reversed. These cards represent your nuclear family – you, your husband, and your daughter.  Because you are all here together and the Queen of Cups is the dominant influence on your home, I do not think the reversals represent major problems.  Instead, they represent the fact that you have significant things going on in other areas of your life, including your work environment, spiritual studies, and possibly these issues with the rest of your family.  Your family life is going to be fairly routine and you will not be able to invest a lot of energy here. You will continue doing the activities and things you enjoy together, but will not have time for anything new and may feel pressure on your home life from the other things that are going on. Because your family life has a strong foundation however, it will not fall apart due to your distraction with other things, but will continue on pretty much on its own.  You may want to watch out for this area though, and make a special point of making time for your husband and daughter occasionally, so that the whole year doesn't go by without any special time together. Your 16-year-old daughter, especially, is in the process of creating a sense of self and purpose for herself, and this may be a period of her life you do not want to miss through inattention.

Sixth House (Employment, Service, Daily Life): Hanged Man reversed (associated with Neptune), The Chariot reversed (associated with Cancer). There are some major issues to work on with respect to your day-to-day life at the crisis center.  Both the Hanged Man reversed and the astrological associations here indicate that you are giving and sacrificing much of yourself to what is going on there. You need to be careful that the tasks don't become overwhelming and you end up giving away all your emotional energy to the needs of others. Your sense of fulfillment is tied to giving service to others, but you must place limits on your capacity to give.  There are strong emotional issues associated with your work at the center that are keeping you in a state of mental suspension – unable to see what is coming next in your life and determine what is right for you. The Chariot is also reversed, indicating that things at work are out of balance and a little out of control. You need to take the reins again, bring the Queen of Swords back into play and begin untangling your emotional involvement from the details of everyday life that need to be looked after.  It is possible that one of the root causes of problems at the crisis center is that in the face of the need and human suffering that you all deal with all the time, there is no time to look after all the everyday tasks and details of keeping the place running. Yet these things are essential to allowing the center to run smoothly so that you can be free to help those you are there to support.  It is going to be important this year to try to create some emotional space between you and the crisis center work you are involved in, not only to try and figure out your own personal future with respect to your job activities, but to help get things at the center under control.

Seventh House (Partnerships, Balance): Ten of Wands, Three of Pentacles, reversed.  You are involved in a partnership that is currently a little off balance – you are bearing an unequal burden and taking on most of the load.  This may be in the area of your marriage, or a business partnership.  Either way, you have enough going on this year that it may be helpful to analyze the partnerships in your life and see where they are unequal, then reallocate some of the tasks and responsibilities to others. This may be hard to do, as generally the Ten indicates self-imposed burdens.  But it will be very helpful in keeping things under control and being able to balance all the things you have coming at you. You may feel that you are not getting adequate recognition for the everyday work you put into keeping your partnerships going.  However, this is partly because you have taken on so much of the burden yourself, and are not asking for the appreciation and recognition that you need. You have been doing this so long that everyone takes it for granted. This may be a good year to try to make some changes, so that you are freed up for personal growth and problem-solving in other areas.

Eighth House (Rebirth, Empowerment, Drives): Queen of Wands reversed, Seven of Wands. You are feeling a strong drive toward reinventing your life. The fire and energy needed for transformation is growing within you, but the Queen of Wands is still reversed, indicating that other things may be siphoning off your energy and keeping you in a position where you cannot yet carry out your goals.  You are facing numerous challenges this year, and are dealing with them all, but they are taking up a lot of the creative energy you have for the moment. Once these other challenges have been dealt with and set aside, you will be ready to pursue your own aims.  This is another reflection of the year 8 in the cycle – you are at the peak of the career you have chosen for yourself and cannot yet afford to take the time to start something new.

Ninth House (Higher Consciousness, Spiritual Development): Princess of Cups, Temperance reversed. Here is another indication of the beginning of a spiritual journey – the Princess gazes into her cup and finds opportunity and pleasure there, surrounded by leaping dolphins.  You are emotionally drawn to this journey, and are waiting for the opportunity to continue further with the process.  If only the seas of life would quiet enough for you to see the path clearly!  Temperance is associated with Sagittarius and seeking for integration between body, mind and spirit. The reversal shows that the balance has not yet been reached, and it is difficult to find the space and time to achieve this level of perfection.  However, you continue to seek and work at it throughout the year.  This house complements and reflects the 5th house, showing a search for spiritual enlightenment at multiple levels of your consciousness.

Tenth House (Career, Status, Achievements): Four of Pentacles, Knight of Wands.  This will be a year in which you will seek to consolidate your status in your current career and build up material resources. Especially with respect to money, you will be taking a fairly conservative approach, trying to build a strong foundation for the future. You may also receive and/or seek an increase in your responsibilities and degree of control over what goes on in your work environment, to try to correct some of the problems you see there.  You may feel this is necessary before you can move on to other things. The Four indicates that you feel a change in this area is overdue, but you feel somewhat constrained for now. The constraints may be real, or they may be self-imposed.  The Knight of Wands represents ideas of what you may want to do next in your career.  For now they are just dreams, but they are beginning to take on a definite shape and you are investing them with some of the same fire seen in the 8th house.  Once you have dealt with some of the situations at the crisis center and no longer feel so tied down emotionally, you will be able to free the Knight from your thoughts and he will spring into action, firing up the Queen of Wands and beginning your transformation.  Again, this is probably not something that will happen immediately, but it is something you are laying the groundwork for in this year.

Eleventh House (Hopes and Wishes, Values and Goals): Five of Cups reversed, Nine of Pentacles.  You are experiencing some disappointment or unhappiness with how things are turning out in some key area of your life.  This is a reflection of the Eight of Cups overall influence on this year, but the reversed Five indicates that you are dwelling on your disappointments negatively rather than recognizing them as an opportunity to change your life more to your wishes. The Nine of Pentacles shows a mature woman, walking in the garden she has created through her own creativity and effort. Even though some things have not turned out as you hoped, others are flowering nicely. These positive aspects may represent your home life, whereas the career area seems to be the area in which the greatest work and change are needed. Some of these more positive areas are also reaching completion however, such as your daughter reaching an age where she will begin to live her own life and be more independent.  It is time to begin thinking about what will come after, and what seeds you will plant in the next garden.

Twelfth House (Subconscious, Dreams, and Hidden Factors): Devil reversed, Princess of Pentacles reversed. Here is an interesting thing. Something in your subconscious keeps you bound to situations which are unhealthy for you. This Devil is making it difficult to reconcile your issues surrounding the crisis center and its place in your life and career. You are drawn to experience negativity and violence and there is a dependence on these things that keeps you involved with them, not only for altruistic reasons. You need to free yourself of these chains and whatever issues are making you feel as though you deserve or need to have this negativity in your life.  Perhaps this is the year to deal with this internal demon – once you do, the Hanged Man may right himself and you will know what to do next. The Princess of Pentacles is an inner child, waiting to be released.  She has a creative project she wants to tell you about, but she can't get past the Devil. Until he is banished, she will remain in your subconscious and your dreams, waiting for her chance to flourish.  These four cards in the 12th and 6th house are intimately related – all four are reversed and these two houses are complimentary. Clearly, subconscious issues are related to the emotional confusion and lack of direction regarding your work at the crisis center.
