Tree of Life Spreads 2: Exploring Relationships

This second spread is used to evaluate existing, established relationships, and is used when the client wants general insight into the relationship and/or wants to solve a specific problem in the relationship.  This reading is especially useful during engagement, as a type of pre-wedding counseling similar to that conducted by many ministers. It would give the couple some insight into their areas of compatibility and differences, their strengths and weaknesses individually and as a couple, and any challenges they may face in their relationship (and of course, suggested strategies for overcoming the challenge :-).   There are two versions of this spread: Use one card in each position when a general reading is desired. Use two cards in each position when a specific problem is asked about, and you would like to get a general sense of the relationship as well as identifying how the normal patterns in the relationship affect the specific topic of the reading.

The cards are laid out in 11 pairs or singles, using the same pattern as was used for the transformational reading:

               10
          8          9
               0
          5          6
               7
          2          3
               4

               1

The three triangles represent different levels of the relationship – the upper triangle (cards 8, 9, and 10) is the spiritual/emotional level, the middle triangle (cards 5, 6, and 7) is the mental or intellectual level, and the bottom triangle (cards 2, 3, and 4) represents the physical level. The position below that (card 1) is the foundation of the relationship or its expression in the world. The left-hand column represents what the female partner bring to the relationship, the right-hand column what the male partner brings to the relationship, and the middle column represents how these are combined in the relationship.  If it is not a male-female relationship, place the client on the left, their partner on the right, or the more passive partner on the left, and the active partner on the right. If you are using pairs of cards, the left-hand card of each pair represents overall energies in the relationship, and the right-hand card represents the bearing that this has on the issue that is being worked on. In each triangle, read from the bottom up, the female or client's pair is read first, the male or partner's pair is read second, and then the corresponding pair representing the relationship is read. The extra pair of cards between the upper and middle triangles are the significator cards for the relationship and the issue that is being worked on. The left-hand card of this pair is chosen from the deck and focuses the reading on the issue. The right-hand card represents overall advice for working on the issue and is read last. The paired version can take quite a while to read, and it is not recommended for "real-time" readings, but rather when you can lay it out and take some time to absorb and process it. There are many, many interrelationships between the cards to explore, and it may take a day or two for every card to find its place in the reading.
